Biodiversity (Convention on Biological Diversity 1992; Wilson, 1988) refers to the diverse types of animals, plants, and insects that exist on the green planet Earth due to genetic, species, habitat, geographic, and ecological variability. Biodiversity and Conservation are two parallels that go hand in hand at each hierarchical level of biological organization. However, loss, and reductions in the abundances and distributions of species, due to impactful anthropogenic activities, have headed pressure on biodiversity that is difficult to sustain. Therefore, a sustainable approach towards biodiversity and its conservation strategies is the need of the hour, which demands proper documentation and ground-level homework to overcome and renew the problems of global loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity reinforces ecosystem function and the provision of sustainable use of flora, fauna,
wildlife, land, air, and water is important for its conservation that remains adriving force for Ecosystem management. In view of these facts, the book focuses on the species diversity, phylogenetic structure, molecular and morphological evidence, and population genetics of fishes from the archipelagos of Lakshadweep, the transcontinental migrants in the wetlands and adjoining areas of Kerala, the spatiotemporal abundance of freshwater mussel along the lower stretch of River Ganga, and down further, the correlation between the ecological condition and faunal diversity index and seasonal fluctuation of Daha River of Bihar. Apart from the aquatic fauna, terrestrial fauna like insects was equally discussed for their study of diversity, relative abundance, biological interaction, and ecosystem services owing to their role of pollinators in protected area networks in the Uttarakhand Garden, hills of Western Himalayas, Melghat Sanctuary, Maharashtra, Wari Forest region, Maharashtra, Son basin of Madhya Pradesh. Avian fauna was also touched by delving into the eco-ornithological characteristics of pelicans and community-based management along with diversity components at regions of Karnataka and the effect of urbanization
and pollution on avifaunal diversity in regions of Bihar. The role of indigenous tribal people such as Totems was deliberated to explore their role in biodiversity conservation; while the Indian antelope as a potential economic pretender of India were also explored. This book framework is a resource guide for basic biodiversity studies and adds detailed information of utmost biological significance in the area concerned, which is bound to provide incredible insights to scientific and academic communities as well.
