Medicinal and aromatic plants have been an inseparable part of the healthcare systems in developing countries like India. The Indian System of Medicines, which boasts to be one of the most reliable alternative systems of medicines in the world, has been developed after the painstaking efforts of our ancestors, sages, tribal healers etc. who tried all the possible combinations to derive the formulations for curing a number of human ailments. These plant-based formulations stand valid until date, after centuries and are being explored for their possible applications in curing modern era lifestyle diseases also.
Considering the great potential of the sector, a number of policies have been developed and are being successfully implemented in India. In order to validate our traditional knowledge and to get insights of its scientific basis, multi-disciplinary efforts have been initiated at various levels. As a part of this process, a number of state agricultural universities and other universities have started offering courses
in the field of natural product research. Full-fledged institutes, working exclusively on medicinal and aromatic plants have also been set up. To empower these institutes/ universities, human resources with appropriate knowledge about the subject is a pre-requisite.
Although the sector has grown tremendously, there has always been dearth of books, which could be useful in preparing for the competitive examinations. This book is a small effort to help the aspiring candidates of ARS and ICAR NET in getting a broader idea about the subject. This would also be useful for students preparing for various competitive examinations such as ICAR JRF/ SRF and entrance examinations of various state agricultural universities. The authors have put in their best efforts to compile the important aspects concerning medicinal and aromatic plants, which a candidate must be aware with while appearing for such examinations. We however, emphasize that this book should not be considered as a substitute for the regular text books/ reference books and journals, which contain plethora of knowledge in them. Authors hope that, this novel attempt will benefit all the aspirants by helping them to get an overview and develop interest in the subject.
