We are introducing our book entitled “Comprehensive Book on Medicinal Plants" to enlighten eager minds of horticulture profession. India has diverse climatic regions including tropical, subtropical, temperate, arid and semi-arid climates which support more biodiversity of medicinal plants. India is one of the 12 mega biodiversity centres of the world. In India, more than 8,000 species are estimated to have medicinal usage in traditional or indigenous or folk and modern systems of medicine. Himalayas alone has more than 1,750 medicinal plants. Medicinal plants offer “Health for All”. Traditional or indigenous systems of medicine function through local or folk or tribal medicine and Codified / Organized Indian System of Medicine. More than 2,400 medicinal plants are used in codified ISM. ISM includes Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy and Tibetan system of medicine (337 species). More than 70% of medicinal plants are collected from forest. About 960 medicinal are in trade. About 70 medicinal plants are sourced from cultivation. Less than 20 medicinal plants are under large scale cultivation. The medicinal plants in large scale cultivation are Senna, Periwinkle, Opium poppy, Isabgol, Safed musli, Sarpangandha, Ashwagandha, Foxglove, Khasi kateri, Long pepper, Henbane, Liquorice, etc. Identification of correct species and selection of suitable high yielding varieties is very important for quality drugs. The chapters cover suitable soil, climate, propagation, water, nutrient, weed, pest and disease management, maturity indices, harvesting, post harvest technology and extraction of major medicinal plants.
This book has been prepared to provide complete information about importance, scope, classification, production and trade, recent developments, secondary metabolites, conservation, varieties, cultivation, pests and diseases of medicinal plants, harvesting, cropping systems, Good Agricultural and Collection Practices and extraction of medicinal plants. This book has been written and published with distinct object in view of gaining knowledge on diversity, conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants”.
